Visiting Istine in Chianti Classico—A Photo Essay
We had an amazing experience visiting with the team at Istine last week at their beautiful estate, located on a thin, isolated ridge in Radda in Chianti. We have been wanting to visit this property for years and this was the perfect opportunity to learn more about their approach and solidify a visit for our Tuscany Study Trip in June.
We especially appreciate the time Angela and Gulia took to walk with us though the vigna Istine, located at 550msl to explain the terrain, the soils and aspect and how it differed from the other two vineyards of Casanuova dell’aia (also in Radda) and Cavarchione (located in Gaiole).
Tasting these single cru wines side by side while looking to the territory allowed us to appreciate each vineyard’s expression. The vigna Istine is the most vertical and tense, Dell’aia floral and structured, and Cavarchione the most open and fruit forward thanks to the lower altitude.
The riserva is a blend of all three vineyards which creates amazing harmonious balance.
And really, if you are looking for one of the best examples of Chianti Classico Annata, Istine’s is one to seek out.
The property is surrounded by juniper berries, which they hand-harvest following the guidance of a 95-year old resident to make their estate gin. Plus wild and cultivated herbs to infuse their vermouth. All grown following organic practices that respect the local ecosystem while producing amazing wines.
There’s so much more to this amazing place, and we cannot wait to be back in June as part of our Tuscany Study Trip June 2-8, 2024.
